Using solar power to pump water
Solar energy normally winds up paying for itself, and solar powered water pumps are no exception to the rule. The largest growth market in solar-powered water pumps is in the agricultural sector, such as farms, ranches and vineyards, but also in big back yard gardens. Water pumps are available in several types, models and sizes, from ones that run on electricity or batteries to solar water pumps that cost very little after you have purchased one. Farms, ranches and king-sized backyard gardens are the usual places for solar-powered water pumps. For greater flexibility and convenience seriously investigate solar-powered circulating pumps, particularly when you are working within 20 feet of the water source, such as ponds, wells and streams. If you are more than 20 feet from the water source then submersible pumps are the best way to go, and you can find these in solar, electric, and battery operated models. Other crucial considerations are the amount of exposure the solar panels will have to sunlight, and how much water you will need to pump, and over how much distance. You may notice that your pump will need a booster, operated either on electricity or batteries, if there isn’t sufficient sunlight to completely power the solar panels.
Truck stuck? A gas powered winch will come in handy
Whether you are a serious hunter or a volunteer recovery worker, chances are you can appreciate the value of a gas powered winch. One of the major benefits of these powerful machines is that they are completely self contained and will go wherever they are needed. Whenever a hard working machine is needed, and you are away from a reliable source of power or the reach of a vehicle, this is the tool for you. There are various applications where utilizing a vehicle mounted winch is not a possibility, such as out in the woods or on a boat. With all the assorted brands and sizes you are sure to get one that has all the features you require. Prior to making a purchase you will want to determine what your power requirements are. You will probably need a high capacity winch if your plans involve hauling items uphill or regularly moving items that do not have wheels. Without these muscular tools you would be bogged down with a back-breaking hand powered winch whenever you were out on the water or off road.
Maintaining your lawn
Installing and caring for a sod lawn
Segment of rooted grass, also called sod, are normally used by professional landscapers to make new lawns. Since it only takes a couple of weeks for a sod lawn to push its roots into the ground, this is a speedy, albeit pricey, method for developing a beautiful lawn. You will need to work quickly as you lay down the sod because it will dry out if you’re not efficient. After you have put the sod in place it will need irrigation two or three times a day, but be sure you don’t give it too much water or the roots could drown. The next step is to avoid damaging the roots when you fertilize, so cautiously add the nutrients potassium, nitrogen and phosphorus with either chemical or organic fertilizer. It is wise to put up a little barrier or fence around the new lawn to discourage pets and people from walking on it before it is fully rooted. For on-going upkeep of the new sod lawn you should fertilize it once a month, and you can begin to mow it after about two weeks.
A riding lawn mower is essential for large yards
If your yard has a lawn that is too big to handle with a conventional push lawnmower you will find the ideal answer in a lawnmower you ride. People with a big yard will spend most of a day mowing the lawn with a push mower but a riding mower is much more efficient and easier on your back. You’ll need a seat that’s comfortable, of course, especially if you have health issues such as leg or back pain. Make sure you buy one with sufficient horsepower to deal with the size and terrain of your yard. Riding mowers are not the same as lawn tractors because of the location of the cutting deck, which allows riding mowers more mobility. The size of the lawn and the size of your budget are the two essential things that will guide buying decision. Another important thing to think about is how you intend to deal with the lawn clippings, either gather them in a bag while you mow, or let them to land on the ground and turn into healthy mulch.

Improve your garden
Solar-powered water fountains
Now is the time to augment your exterior decor with solar-powered water fountains, a striking way to grace your property with the relaxing sounds and physical beauty of streaming water. The peace and calm inspired by the presence of water fountains in your yard is matched by the warm feeling you get when you save money and the environment by utilizing solar technology around the home. The three most important factors to take a look at when you select a solar-powered water fountain are the amount of sunshine the solar panels will receive, the amount of cash you have to spend, and the size of the area where you are going to set it up. With a big yard and a healthy budget you can set up waterfalls and fountains amidst lovely garden ponds, producing a spectacular back yard paradise filled with marvelous sights and the delightful sound of flowing water. These beautiful decor accents are available in a broad choice of styles, sizes, materials and colors ranging from the natural, earthy tones of copper, terracotta, slate, and stone to glazed, polished ceramics and finely carved marble. Solar-power has the extra advantage of being safer in the vicinity of water-related structures than electrical-powered mechanisms, and so you can set up solar powered lights and savor your backyard oasis at night and not worry about electrical accidents. Owners of homes are not the only people who have the chance to relish the tranquil sounds and sights of a solar water fountain, as apartment dwellers can also set up a smaller fountain on their balcony. You can quickly add up the benefits of having solar fountains and see that they are more economical, safer, and better for the environment than electric fountains, plus they are easy to install and, like all outdoor fountains, bring grace and charm to your surroundings.
Wood too expensive? Then consider a metal building kit
Building with lumber has become so costly that more and more people are buying metal building kits for both residential and commercial purposes. Steel is the most cost-effective material for small buildings since most of the labor could be done by the owner with the help of a forklift and a crane. Steel building material has been developed to the point where it will be able to manage many different environments and temperature fluctuations. Among the advantages of metal buildings are their sturdiness and durability but you need to be aware of the disadvantages. One disadvantage to metal structures is condensation, but this problem can be handled with adequate insulation, which can also dampen noises. Because steel sheeting and framing conduct heat rapidly you should think about putting in radiant barrier insulation so that the structure stays cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Because these are permanent buildings you need to get all your local permits in order; the engineer-approved drawings and anchor bolt plans are included with the kit.
The appropriate liner will greatly extend the lifespan of your pond
The liners used for building ponds are made ofdifferent kinds of plastic which prohibit weeds from growing and prevent the water from leaking into the ground. When choosing a liner, the important points to consider are the dimensions of the pond, the material the liner is constructed from, and the thickness.
Your first task when getting a pond liner will be to determine the exact size. To determine the size of your liner, it is necessary to measure the width and length of the pond, as well as double the maximum depth. You will also need to allow for a foot or two of overhang around the pond. Obtaining a liner that is too large is better than having one which is too small.
These liners are manufactured from a variety of materials and are available in a number of different thicknesses, and are usually measured in mils (1 ml = 1/1000 of an inch). If you are building smaller ponds, especially if they will be free form, a 30 ml liner is a safe selection. If your pond is larger you might need to consider a more sturdy pond liner, manufactured using 40 ml or 45 ml rubber, which will give years of reliable use.
Pond liners can be built from an assortment of materials. A very popular and reliable material is EPDM, which is an industrial grade rubber. This product is available in a variety of sizes and works perfectly in almost any style of pond. The major disadvantage of EPDM will be its high price, however lots of people consider the material is so simple to work with and so resilient that the extra cost does not matter.
High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is an alternative product that is employed quite often because of its lower cost per sq. ft. It is a man-made plastic liner that is adequately durable and sold in 20 – 40 ml thicknesses. HDPE is cheaper than a rubber pond liner and typically stretchy enough to form effectively into tight corners.
PVC is another material that is often used, although it has disadvantages once the application entails supporting something as heavy as water. Pond liners made from PVC will not be as durable as either EPDM or HDPE liners, but they are usually less expensive. To put together a more solid pond, you may get a preformed liner in either fiberglass or hard plastic. Preformed pond liners can be manufactured of fish-friendly fiberglass or vinyl and come in various dimensions, designs, and capacities.
Whichever kind of pond liner material you decide on, make sure that it is made utilizing UV protection. Using this screens your liner from destructive UV energy that will make it crumble in a relatively short time. Liner resilience and maintenance rely on the type of material chosen, and that will dictate what type of supplies are needed to sustain a healthy pond.

Fences
Beautify your home with a fence made from wrought iron
When the landscape of your yard and your exterior home decor have a traditional appeal, think about installing wrought iron fencing. You can find many designs and styles of decorative fencing that can match the look of your property, including antique Victorian picket fences and vintage cast iron styles. For a conventional landscaping scheme wooden fences are also very popular and less expensive than wrought iron, but metal fences don’t require the maintenance that wood calls for and could in the long run be less costly. Residential fences aren’t the only use for these since commercial property is often enclosed by 7 foot tall versions which are attractive and add security. Instead of fulfilling a purely functional purpose, wrought iron fences are more of a ornamental accent than a safety measure. While these fences will provide excellent security, especially when they are 7 feet tall, they are not very good for privacy fences since their beauty is an attention-getter. Your privacy requirements can still be well served with this type of fencing as long as you add bushes or flowering vines beside them.
Using metal fencing for your garden
Wood and metal are both excellent materials for backyard fences, but in a garden fence you may find that metal is preferred for its durability and ornamental potential. Available in a dazzling array of styles and sizes, metal garden fencing is typically constructed of either aluminum, which is simple and less expensive, or wrought iron, which is more ornamental and costly. The place for wood fencing in your backyard is usually around the border of the yard and serves to contribute privacy, but for a garden metal fencing is more appealing and will better fit in with many landscaping schemes. A lot depends on whether you want your metal fences to compliment the look of your garden, or vice versa, you will find varieties of metal fencing that are simple and unadorned, or styles that are bold and vibrant and become the focal point of your garden more than the actual garden itself. One pragmatic function of garden fences is to discourage pets and children from running around and causing harm to your plants, in which case you need to figure out how high the fence needs to be. The entrance to the garden requires special attention, and you need to determine if a gate or arbor is right for you. There are many homeowners who choose to leave an open space for the entrance to their garden to emphasize the sense of open space, while others prefer having an arbor or gate or both, in which case the entrance to the garden is a central focal point to the backyard. A stand alone arbor makes an excellent garden entrance, and if you don’t have kids or pets to worry about you don’t need a gate to go with it.
Automatic gate openers
Nowadays lots of people have greater concerns about security and are choosing to install electric gate openers. No matter what type or size of gate that you have, you are sure to locate an opener which can meet your requirements. Mechanized gate openers are on the market for a variety of purposes and functions, and your options include load sensors, optical sensors and farm gate openers. It is a good idea to study up on the many models of automatic gate openers and determine which one will work with the size and type of gate that you have. You will need to make sure that the gate is in excellent operating condition before getting one installed. It is important to consider the value of added convenience and security when determining the price you are willing to pay. These gate openers will feel invaluable when you consider the annoyance of opening the gate yourself in foul weather conditions.

Storage sheds are a great way to organize materials and tools
A good garden storage shed can help to have all of your supplies placed close to the garden instead of you having to make trips in and out of the garage. Garden sheds can be used to stow so many useful stuff, ranging from gardening materials to powered devices and hand tools. These sheds also create good potting rooms, craft spaces, and children?s playhouses. There are many choices about what kind of shed will work best for your requirements, from basic and unpretentious to the more attractive kind that has windows to let in extra light.
Of course, the initial thing you must determine is the right size for your new shed and considering the things it will need to accommodate. If utilizing it to keep your lawnmower, make sure you opt for a garden shed that can have plenty of remaining floor space after you add in all the tools and accessories you need to store. It is most often best to purchase a storage shed which is somewhat bigger than you need for your existing garden materials and equipment, because more than likely you will acquire more items in the future. You don’t want to have to purchase a new shed just because you upgraded to a larger lawnmower. If planning to employ the shed for other purposes, you will need to look for a type which permits for separate spaces. As an example, your children must have their own isolated area, away from work equipment that can be hazardous to be near during play time.
When determining the proper headroom of the garden shed, you must decide if you are going to be working in the shed. You will need a higher ceiling to ensure it is comfortable to stand up for extended periods of time when it might be used as a workspace. There are some storage sheds which incorporate an extra space above the ceiling, which provides you added storage without taking up extra room. Garden sheds are offered in several different materials including vinyl, metal, and wood. Wood sheds tend to be higher priced, but can also be more appealing, while metal sheds are incredibly tough and available in an assortment of colors. Vinyl sheds are the least expensive option and should need practically no upkeep.
Observe the outside temperature with a digital outdoor thermometer
If you would like to keep an eye on changing weather patterns in your area an outdoor thermometer is an excellent device. Devices like these are small enough to attach to a window or door, and because they are digital you don’t have to squint to read the temperature like you usually have to do with conventional thermometers. There is a good range of colors and designs available that can match your outdoor decor. These thermometers are usually very economical and it doesn’t cost much more to buy one that also records the relative humidity. Some models can swivel so that they can be placed on the outside of a window but read from inside the house. Never operate an interior thermometer outdoors because it probably won’t be adequately water-proofed. Battery powered devices are initially less expensive than solar-powered models, but batteries eventually run out of life and don’t work as reliably in very cold weather.
Wind chimes produce a mellow mood outdoors
If you are looking for a cheaper method of producing a relaxed mood around the house take wind chimes into consideration. Made out of metal, stained glass, wood or enamel plate, wind chimes have been enjoyed since the Chinese first employed them for spiritual rituals centuries ago. While you can buy wind chimes in a huge array of styles, sizes and materials for both indoors and out, wind chimes made out of metal tubes are the best selling. Another popular outdoor set of chimes is bamboo, which has a distinct sound that produces a highly soothing effect even in the slightest of breezes. Sun catcher models are constructed of stained glass and look as fantastic as they sound as they sway in the sunshine and play beautiful music. If you have any old silverware laying around you can turn them into wind chimes with a light-hearted, old-fashioned look and a down home country charm. Garden bell chimes also create a soothing ringing sound that is welcome indoors as well as out on the backyard terrace. The most popular outside models are constructed of metal tubes which offer weather resistance and strength.

Accessories for your yard and garden
Garden statues
There is no better way to accent the appearance of your garden or yard than with angel garden statues, those divinely inspired figures of peace and tranquility. While a lot of folks enjoy angel statues for their religious meaning, others treasure them for the note of serenity these figures bring to any exterior decor. These adorable figures will help create a haven of tranquility and peace around your home, particularly when combined with aromatic flowers and gently flowing water fountains. There is also a wide selection of prices available for any type of statuary, depending on what materials the statues are made of, with marble, ivory or bronze being the most expensive, and ceramic, granite, porcelain, and polyresins the least expensive. Polyresin garden statues are widely considered a great economical alternative since they are easily given a faux finish to seem like more costly material such as ivory and marble. The rosters of charming garden statues are filled with whimsical figures of cherubs, gnomes, fairies and gargoyles, but none of them can equal the angel figure for tranquility and quiet reverence. These inspirational statues are available in different poses, such as standing angels with open wings, or angels that kneel with praying hands, all of which will reflect spiritual attitudes of joy, or reverence. While angel statues can certainly fit in with any traditionally themed outside design plans, you will also find statues designed to fit in with the sleek modernistic looks that are also very popular.
Weathervanes
That iconic symbol of the American heartland, the weathervane with the rooster atop it, has turned into more of a decoration than a farm implement. Copper weathervanes are available in all designs and styles that are guaranteed to give the outside or inside of your residence an appealing feel. Unfinished copper weathervanes always age with a naturalistic patina, while other weather vanes are coated to endure hard weather and never show age. You can mount your weather vanes anywhere you want to with the right installation pieces. How big your weather vane should be is usually dictated by where you place it, as a roof-top vane needs to be a lot larger than one you mount on a patio table, for instance. To lend the backyard garden a certain old-fashioned feeling, install a weathervane upon a pole amidst your plants and flowers. Rooftop weathervanes are also big favorites with business owners who want to draw attention to their place with a touch of class.
Show your love of birds by putting in a heated bird bath
Most of the birds in your area fall into the category of “welcome wildlife,” creatures whose habitation around one’s yard is highly desirable and sought after, which is the reason birdbaths are so popular. Birds desire fresh water to drink and bathe in, and a heated birdbath will work as a strong attraction drawing them over to your place on a regular basis. It is easy to construct your own birdbath, but you need to appreciate the fact the water should not be more than three inches deep, and that the surface of the bowl can’t be too smooth or steep, or the birds won’t be able to maintain their footing. You need to get the birdbath ready by putting on the bottom of the basin some fine gravel to enable the birds keep their footing, and put in a few flat stones to make shallow areas for them to perch. If you have a birdbath that’s heated in the winter you are helping the birds survive since they need unfrozen fresh water to live, so keep the temperature from 40 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit. The majority of pre-constructed heated birdbaths are equipped with a 120 v., 200 w. de-icer to heat the birdbath, with a stainless steel guard to protect the heater from errant birds. Any suitable de-icer will come with a thermostat to automatically maintain the birdbath in the appropriate temperature range without causing any television or radio interference. These de-icers are sealed in epoxy and waterproof, and are available with hardware such as stabilizing brackets, handles and hooks to make sure the heater isn’t pulled into the water by a bunch of busy birds.

Solutions for your lawn
For those big jobs, get a commercial walk behind lawn mower
Walk behind and riding lawn mowers are the two basic models you can find on the market nowadays. Commercial mowers will usually provide increased durability and power in order to handle the grueling conditions they are likely to face. There is a good variety of walk behind mowers to pick from including electric, gas-powered, cordless and push reel. If you own a lawn service business you will need to pick the kind of equipment that will provide you with the best productivity for your crews. It is normally necessary to have several different types of mowers available in order to fulfill your needs. Commercial walk behind models are typically your best choice if you are doing residential jobs, especially if there are lawns with lots of obstacles present. Commercial accounts that have vast areas of flat lawn with no obstacles will usually be best served by a ride on mower. It is critical that you constantly have the appropriate safety gear including gloves, glasses and ear plugs.
Lawn and garden sprinklers
The biggest difference between a lush green lawn and a sparse yellow lawn is water, and the most effective and easiest way to water a lawn is with an automatic sprinkler system. Making sure your lawn and garden have enough sunshine and fertilizer is crucial, but always remember that adequate watering is an on-going, critical concern. Among the many benefits of using an automatic sprinklers are convenience, intelligent water management, and proper lawn and garden care. For bigger lawns and gardens, there are rotary sprinklers which spread over areas within 15 to 85 feet of the sprinkler head in a Full rotation of 360 degrees, a very effective method of watering thoroughly. Pop-up spray sprinklers are perfect for smaller gardens and lawns, as they emit a light mist over an area of 18 feet away. For hanging plants there are hanging basket sprinklers from Spelt Co. which are activated when the basket is dry and light, and then turns off when the basket is heavy and wet. For trees, bushes and other large plant-life, drip irrigation systems are highly advisable, although setting up such a watering system appears complex given the filters, valves, emitters, jet sprays, controllers, pressure regulators, and fittings that are involved in the drip system. Before you proceed with any landscaping plan you ought to to assess your watering needs and determine which automatic watering system is the most suitable, and you are advised to consult with a professional landscaper before moving forward.

Improve a garden area
Bring elegance to your landscaping with a garden arbor
An arbor is a popular and highly desirable garden structure valued for its elegant beauty and terrific versatility, and which can prove to be the focal point of your backyard decor. There are many appropriate areas in your yard to have an arbor, especially if you want to create an entrance from one part of your yard to another, such as an entryway into a garden from a terrace. While arbors are typically installed in the backyard, they could be used as an entrance to the front yard, which would work great with a gate and a fence. You need to base your choice of arbors on the look of your garden or other landscaping designs, and you can get them built out of wood, wrought iron, copper, or aluminum. How the arbor blends with the rest of your outside decor is of major importance, such as the look of your garden and the appearance of your house. You may desire the arbor to be a part of the garden itself, with ivy, grapes or other vines growing around it, or you could hang up flower pots on it, or you may want to plant flowers all around the bottom of it. By adding benches to your arbor you can make it a social center, or a place for rest and reflection after a hard day, or by hanging a swing it can be a place for children to play. Although arbors can significantly boost the marketability of your property, they are relatively affordable and very easy to install and maintain, which makes them one of the top home improvement values around.
Four types of pond filters
One of the most lovely components you can include in any landscaping scheme is a pond. If you plan to put fish in the pond you certainly need a filter to help maintain clean water, and you have an option of intake, in-line, submersible, and external filter types. The least costly models are intake filters which keep debris from clogging the pump but don’t help maintain clean water and need to be rinsed out every day. If you have a waterfall or water fountain along with a pond you should pick an in-line filter which operates with water pressure and maintains clean water and an unclogged pump. You might have to wade out into the pond to use a submersible filter, and be cautious when cleaning them, but otherwise submersibles are an excellent filter for water quality. The largest and most in demand model is the external filter, which can go weeks without cleaning, works great with fountains and waterfalls, and helps keep the water clean and your pump free of debris.
Year around growing with a green house kit

Usually you can find a model that matches nicely with the exterior design of your house. Have snow? Here are some snowblower tips
Snow blowers
Even though a new snowfall may be really beautiful, you must get back on the streets of life and eventually all that beautiful snow must be dealt with. The two types of equipment to remove snow will be shovels and snow blowers, and you back will be glad if you select the latter. 300 pounds of compacted snow should be no trouble for a well-built snow blower, and remember that total horsepower will determine the overall efficiency of the blower. With a foot of dense snow to remove, you can either use a shovel, or a top quality blower, which means you should search for the best snow blowers available. The best, and most expensive, snow blowers are two-stage gas powered machines that collect the snow and then blow it off to one side. The electric single stage snow blowers are less powerful and less costly than the two-stage, and are more suited to areas that only receive a modest snowfall each year. Additionally, the texture of the surfaces which need clearing will also determine what type of snow blower to buy, depending on whether or not the surfaces are smooth or lumpy. After you assess the surfaces you have to clear, estimate the dimensions of the areas needing to be cleared and the quantity of snow you expect, and at that point you will know enough to make a choice.
The best snow throwers
You can find all kinds of snow removal equipment on the market nowadays, from simple shovels to large gas powered snow throwers. A good snow thrower can really take all the strenuous work out of clearing your walks after a storm. You have a choice among electric, single-stage, or double stage snow throwers, and which one you pick is determined by the size of the space you must clear and the kind of snow you usually encounter. Those people who are only clearing a small space will probably be fine with an electric model. While they don’t have as much power as other models, they are easier to maintain and store away. For medium jobs you might want to consider a one-stage model which will cut a path of between 16 and 20 inches and handle snow up to seven inches deep. If you have jobs that are more difficult such as sloped surfaces or heavy, deep snow it is smarter to stick with a two-stage model.
